Poem by Hwange Youth Group, Initiated During the Human Rights Workshop

Human rights, human rights, human rights
Where were you when I was hungry?
Where were you when I was without decent shelter and clothes?
Where were you when I lacked education and health care?
I failed to deal with problems of daily existence while you were alive.
Human rights, human rights, human rights
Where were you when I was unemployed?
I was always on the margins of the society.
Human rights, human rights, human rights
Without you, I was non-existent
Such that I felt excluded from decisions made day in day out
I was discriminated against by those I lived with.
I was sexually manipulated and abused
Human rights, human rights, human rights
They treated me like a woman in many cultures
While you were there watching me
Oh human rights, human rights, human rights
You have come to my rescue
I am going to use you as a weapon for my life,
Our lives and the nation at large
