Violence continued unabated in Nigeria during the festive season. Benue State was once again particularly hard hit. Below is an unedited version of the latest report by Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of Makurdi:
Dear friends in Christ, Blessings of the New Year to all. It is with a very heavy heart that I am sending you this document which speaks of the situation of continued killings and displacement in the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi- Nigeria.
Throughout the year 2022, we sent periodic updates on atrocities against poor villagers in our diocese masterminded by Fulani herdsmen terrorists. At the start of this New Year, we again bring you the first update on continued killings and displacements.
Our appeal is for all persons of goodwill to continue to spread the word about these killings and to help us in ways that bring these atrocities to an end. We are grateful to everyone for prayers and efforts made to address this concern. May the New Year bring us Peace and a cessation to the killings and displacements.
Attached to the report below are some photos which I know are gory but nonetheless necessary for all to see what atrocities are committed against our people by Fulani herdsmen terrorists.

Gyungu Aze, Guma LGA | Fulani herdsmen blocked the main access road and robbed one Giwa Deva of Tse Keleke Mbalagh taking away his motor bike. No life was lost. |
*the deceased is a local Roman Catholic church leader who conducts services in the absence of the clergy. Eye witnesses said he was preparing to go to the church and participate in Christmas eve activities heralding the birthday of Christ when herdsmen waylaid and shot him. The incidence caused tension within the community as many people fled for fear of the unknown.
*Tse Kwenyi is a village very close to the 72 military barracks in North Bank-Makurdi. How such killings keep happening close to a military formation without consequences speaks volumes.
